Napoleon the Great, after his final defeat, was shipped as a prisoner of war to the lonely island of Saint Helena. There he read the Bible and made some most significant statements about Christ. One of these was the following: «I know men and I tell you that Jesus was not just a man...Alexander the Great, Caesar, Charlemagne and I, founded great empires using military force. Jesus, however, founded His kingdom on love. The founders of the various religions of the world had no idea of this mystical love, which is the very essence of Christianity...The greatest miracle of Christ, undoubtedly, is the kingdom of love...All who believe on Him, feel that wonderful and supernatural love, which is an unexplainable phenomenon, a holy fire brought to the earth by the new Prometheus, that the all-subduer time can neither quench nor limit. I, Napoleon, admire this fact most, and to my mind that proves absolutely the Deity of Christ...»  («Christ and Modern Thought»)  by Demetrios Magriotis, 1948, p.151). Rendered in English by Markos Boussios.

The power of the gospel is seen in transformed lives. Man is born a slave to sin. Religion, philosophy, ethics, good works, and whatever else one might think of, cannot deliver him. Only faith in the gospel of Christ "which is the power of God unto salvation" can.
