(An extrabiblical testimony)
The chronicler Phlegon (2nd c. A.D.) writes: «In the fourth year of the two hundred and second Olympiad - four-year periods between two Olympic games events - an eclipse of the sun occurred, the greatest of all known before, and at the sixth hour of the day it became night, so that even stars appeared in the sky. Also, a powerful earthquake striking Bithynia destroyed much of Nicea» According to authorities specializing in the field, these events are the same with those that occurred when Christ was crucified. (Constantine Metallinos: The Epistle to the Romans p.175).
(Dionysius the Areopagite, tradition)
According to an unascertained tradition, Dionysius the Areopagite, being at Helioupolis of Egypt the day Christ died, seeing the darkness and feeling the earthquake, is reputed to have said to his companion Apollophanis: «The unknown God is suffering, for whom the world is darkened and shaken» (Con. Metallinos, ibidem p. 177[sic]). Rendered in English by Markos Boussios.
