On the 16th of this month, September 2007, Greece held general elections. The campaign has been a heated one, much more so because of the unprecedented wild fires that devastated the land during the summer, for which the opposition, on the whole, accused the ruling New Democracy Party (conservative), and the government ιn particular. The outcome was almost as expected in the light of several public opinion polls. Five parties in all won entrance to the 300-seat Parliament. New Democracy, won with a good margin in vote, but, due to the electoral law, only a very slim majority in seats. However, the new government has been sworn in and political life goes on with hopes and fears as usual. We Christians are commanded of God to obey those that are in authority in all matters, except those that have to do with our faith and relationship with our Lord. We are also exhorted to make supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, for them, that "we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." (I Tim. 2:1,2).
